CITYMATTERS.LONDON 04 - 17 March 2020 | Page 21 RESIDENT OPINION subscribe to our newsletter at citymatters.london TIME WE STARTED WORKING TOGETHER IN a favourite haunt on Whitecross Street I’m waiting for Billy, writes Jacqueline Swanson. He’s gone got himself an apprentice – me. I’m Billy’s friend, neighbour, sometime co-conspirator and fully aware of how big Billy’s boots are, so for now refusing to try fill them solo. About me: let’s start with Golden Lane Estate, and how I got here. By sheer luck six years ago. Someone rather lovely thought that I was too and, well… I married in. After decades of renting with all the inherent insecurity I joined a stable, real community. Amazing and life changing which probably speaks to why I’ve become a bit of an accidental activist – a great place to live shouldn’t just be down to fate and the ‘right’ online dating profile. After the usual gossip Billy and I talked themes for our first joint column. Wellness, we thought – bit of a buzzword, even has it’s own section in this paper. But beyond yoga, veganism and getting up from your desk what does it really mean day to day for Golden Lane residents. Let’s start with clean air, quiet times, green space – topics we’ll come back to. To tackle them we need some agency over our environment. It’s not about taking an entrenched view but we need it demonstrated that those in power who can impose potentially damaging and stressful changes on us are aware of and care about our lived experience. Consultation is exhausting, disheartening. When there’s unaddressed distrust these often ill-conceived drop in events can generate bad feeling. Reasonable residents find themselves getting angry and frustrated and yet so few of us are warriors, we’re not here for the fight. When residents stop turning up, it’s not a measure of their concern or anxiety; they’re just losing faith. But we say don’t – there are some City officers, the quiet but steady catalysts, who really want to do well by us. An organisation is bigger than its people, but its people can change it. And together we’re succeeding – with its Notice is hereby given that Bloomsbury Leisure Holdings Limited has applied in respect of the Batting Stars, 100 Bishopsgate, London, EC2N 4AG for the grant of a new premises licence under the Licensing Act 2003 to permit the following: To permit provision of films, indoor sporting events and recorded music from 08:00 hours until 00:00 hours daily. Let’s help them kick the reforms we want into place.
